CHARACTERS IN DISCUSSION:
- Suyambulingam (Kamal Haasan) from Papanasam (2015)
- George Kutty (Mohanlal) from Drishyam 1 (2013) & Drishyam 2(2021)
- Walter White (Bryan Cranston) from Breaking Bad (2008-2013)
Just because Papanasam was Drishyam’s remake, that does not automatically transpire that Suyambulingam and George Kutty were one and the same. There comes a scene in Drishyam 2 where the Chief Investigation Officer (Murali Gopy) tells that ‘George Kutty escaped for the first time just because of his luck and not because of his acumen’. I think this applies to Suyambulingam but not George Kutty. If Varun’s family had gone full guns on Suyambulingam just like they did on George Kutty, most probably Suyambulingam was gonna end up in prison. Suyambulingam literally breaks down before Varun’s parents in Papanasam’s climax scene and I am not sure whether he will be as strong as George Kutty to wage this war for the rest of his life. He may be or may be not. We do not know. But one thing is for sure. Suyambulingam and George Kutty are not the one and the same.
Up next is Walter White, aka Heisenberg. Walter did what he did for his family. But he did not stop once he achieved his objective. He went on and on to the point of no return. Or maybe the path he chose for his family’s survival was a path from which he may never return. Anyways he kept on doing the meth business saying that he did that solely for his family. But at the series finale, we saw Walter’s confession to Skyler (Anna Gunn) that he kept on doing the meth business because, it made him feel alive. Now, if you can understand why Suyambulingam and Walter White are the two ends of this spectrum, it becomes relatively easy to understand why George Kutty lies in the middle.
George Kutty is literally the same badass as Walter White. The differences being, he knew where to stop and he did all those things just to protect his family. George Kutty and Suyambulingam faced the same situations in their life but Suyambulingam was already broken at the end of the first battle, whereas George Kutty had already decided that he was gonna win that battle, the next one, the next one and above all, the whole freaking war. Nothing might break him.
