Dune: Part One, the movie based on Dune, the novel by Frank Herbert is my first Denis Villeneuve film in theatres and I am still so ecstatic about that because Dune easily found a place among my top cinematic experiences.
Since I had completed the book just hours before entering the theatre, this movie experience was nothing like I had ever witnessed before. For the first time in my life, I was entering the theatre with a feeling that I knew almost everything that’s gonna appear on that screen. And once the images started to appear, it dawned upon me that they were just like how I had imagined in my mind while reading DUNE, the book.
Especially the Ornithopters! Seeing them land and take off! Man, the production design team deserves all the praise in this world. And I have a little to thank myself too. Because I decided against watching the movie’s last trailer which was released just a week ago (which I saw after watching the movie, and you know what, it had a clip of an ornithopter in it), just so that my mind is fresh with images from book which can be opened up only by the visuals in the theatre. And it turned it to be a bull’s eye decision on my part.
The entire team of Dune shared Denis’ vision to turn this novel into what it is, an epic, and we should be glad that we are living in a time to witness such epicness. I am saying that we should be glad, because most of us might not have been born at the time of ‘Star Wars’, and most of us might not had the chance to watch ‘Lord of the Rings’ on big screens when they got released and not all of us were quite lucky to watch all ‘Harry Potter’ movies before completing our school life itself.
And all for all such epicness, I/we missed, we got DUNE by Denis and the team and this sure made up for all the things I might have missed and this experience will be a treasure in the uncertain future where I can sit back and think about the first time I ever watched Dune in theatres!
But once the movie ended I understood a thing. For the experience of watching a movie by familiarising myself with the source material, I traded the experience of getting to know about something from scratch. Maybe that’s the price I had to pay!
Blood for blood!
