Schitt’s Creek – Simply the Best Sitcom?

Upon finishing Schitt’s Creek, I watched the documentary ‘Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: A Schitt’s Creek Farewell’ where we got to hear a part of the story behind creating one of the most heart-warming TV shows ever made. And we can see Cameron Crowe saying, ‘I think time is gonna be very, very good to this show’ and I feel no one could have put it better about what Schitt’s Creek is all about.

· BEAUTY IN THE BUCOLIC

I have watched quite a few sitcoms and it needed a show like Schitt’s Creek to facilitate me to embrace the beauty in the mundanity of a small town like Schitt’s Creek. Because that’s where I come from. I haven’t had the chance yet to live among the biggest skyscrapers or the cities that are thriving till the Sun comes up and gets transformed into the next day just like that. One of the things I looked forward in Schitt’s Creek was those intermediate transition shots between characters which involve showing the empty road with the train line in between, the dilapidated name boards, some random farm or that twin tower kinda building (I still don’t know what that was!).

· JOURNEY WITH THE ROSES

The Rose family’s redemption arc from their financial downfall to making the best out of tough situations forms the core of Schitt’s Creek. And each Rose rose differently in their character arcs. Johnny brought back an enthusiasm which might be his old street-smart ways before he became a home-video tycoon. Moira Rose became an icon not just for the townspeople of Schitt’s Creek but also for a lot of people off the screen with her unwavering demeanour.

And we all know how David grew up both professionally and a whole lot personally through his camaraderie with Stevie and the love of his life, Patrick. And among all the family members, the crown jewel of the character arcs would obviously be the character arc of the ‘Queen of the show‘, Alexis. Annie Murphy radiates an awesome energy every time she appears on the screen and her relationship with Ted which ended on a bitter note just because their lives demanded different things taught us a lot.

The Roses from Schitt's Creek

· DAN LEVY

Dan Levy as David Rose. An absolute cracker. The fact that he co-created, wrote, directed and starred in Schitt’s Creek generates an odd respect towards him and I think David will be one of the most relatable fictional characters from my side although his fashion sense seems like a Mt. Everest to me. And man, what an on-screen crier he is! Just manages to move me to tears along with him almost every time. And when I watched the documentary ‘Best Wishes, Warmest Regards‘ post the series finale, I just understood Dan Levy brought out David to paper from most of his own personal traits and I can understand why David feels so personal. I think it’s a good time to be a Dan Levy stan.

David and Patrick from Schitt's Creek

· DAVID AND PATRICK

Once the series was over, I asked myself a question. ‘Are you sure David and Patrick is the best fictional couple of all time according to you?’. And my reply was the exact same phrase Patrick said when David asked Patrick whether he was sure about getting married, ‘Easiest decision of my life’. I have no words to describe my happiness whenever I see these two together. David and Patrick FTW.

· A BETTER WORLD

One of the main reasons behind my fondness towards David and Patrick’s relationship was obviously the friends and family of the couple. From what I have seen, there were no signs of homophobia from any of the characters in Schitt’s Creek. Even with a character like Roland who looks tailor-made to channel such inappropriate jokes regarding one’s sexual affiliation, the makers chose to avoid homophobic gaze and gave us a beautiful view of a possible world if we choose kindness and love over hatred and bigotry. And here’s some wisdom from Roland.

Well, you know, Johnny, when it comes to matters of the heart, we can’t tell our kids who to love.’

Schitt's Creek Family

Do watch this awesome show and let us strive to create a world of Schitt’s Creek for real where kindness and love shadows overall.
